Are you looking for graphic design for your action sports company? There are so many expenses involved with running a business, and especially in this economy it is not uncommon for business owners to create websites without a custom design, or even not have a website all together. So why is a graphic designer essential for your business? A few reasons actually:

1) Paying for a professional design shows that you are professional

I would suggest looking at graphic design for your business as an investment. Paying for a professional design helps you show the world that your business IS professional. In this day and age, creating a unique presence is super important, and a competent graphic designer can certainly help you accomplish this.

Take a moment and think about some of the memorable graphical representations of the business world today. The “golden arches” or McDonalds, the Nike “swoosh”, both of these symbols are very memorable.

2) Don’t disappoint your clients!

Nothing is worse than a potential client coming to your website to learn more about your business, and leaving disappointed. Having a website is about so much more than just having some basic information about what you do. It is a chance to really show and convince your potential customers why they NEED you.

I understand that the new business owner is going to try and pinch pennies wherever possible, but I suggest that you do not skimp when it comes to going with graphic design. I would view hiring a competent graphic designer as an investment, rather then a payment. This work will go a long way in establishing the credibility of your business and image, one that will help make that all important first impression a selling one.

3) Establish your “image”

You need to look unique, you need to be memorable, and that just isn’t going to happen if you use the same old template everyone else does. This is especially relevant in the action sports industry.

To find the right designer for you, I would suggest taking some time looking at a few graphic design artists, paying special attention to if they have worked with action sports in the past. If their work is not impressive, this is not a good reflection of the type of work that they will be able to do for you!

2 one 5 is an action sports design firm located in Philadelphia, PA. You can learn more about this exciting company and how they can help you at their official website:

Design for Democracy: Ballot and Election Design Review

In recent years, the United States, this supposed bastion of democracy, has been failing in one of the most fundamental aspects of a functioning democratic system: making ballots and election materials that can be easily read, understood, and which ensure that the desires of the voting populace are committed in the way they intend, and count the way they should. This excellent design book showcases the way that information relating to voting should be made so that all confusion is eliminated in the voting booth, and credibility can be restored to the voting process in this country. Given the way this country has been going lately, I hope it happens sooner rather than later. This book is a great first step.

Design for Democracy: Ballot and Election Design Overview

In November 2000, when the now-infamous “butterfly ballot” confused crucial Florida voters during a hotly contested presidential race, the importance of well-designed ballots to a functioning democracy caught the nation’s attention. Recognizing that our entire voting process—from registering to vote to following instructions at the polling place—can be almost as confusing as the Florida ballot, Design for Democracy builds on the lessons of 2000 by presenting innovative steps for redesigning elections in the service of citizens.

Handsomely designed itself, this volume showcases adaptable design models that can improve almost every part of the election process by maximizing the clarity and usability of ballots, registration forms, posters and signs, informational brochures and guides, and even administrative materials for poll workers. Design for Democracy also lays out specific guidelines—covering issues of color palette, typography, and image use—that anchor the comprehensive election design system devised by the group of design specialists from whose name the book takes its title. Part of a major AIGA strategic program, this group’s prototypes and recommendations have already been used successfully in major Illinois and Oregon elections and, collected here, are likely to spread across the country as more people become aware of the myriad benefits and broad applicability of improved election design.

An essential tool for designers and election officials, lawmakers and citizens, Design for Democracy harnesses the power of design to increase voter confidence, promote government transparency, and, perhaps most important, create an informed electorate.
