Piecing together all the factors that make your business thrive can be quite confusing; I mean there are millions of advice guides and articles for new business owners available for free online but who do you listen to? And how can you guarantee that you aren’t wasting your money on Graphic design and Marketing that could just fail before your eyes.

Well you cannot guarantee anything and I cannot tell you who to listen to, so that is why you should try and test everything and keep a record of what works and what doesn’t. It may be time consuming and cost you money but when you discover what works for you, you can start making that money back.

OK so here are a few things you must have when starting a business:

1) Graphic designGraphic design is an important part of the brand, in fact it is what will be thought of first and how you are recognized by your customers and other members of the public. Doing it properly is essential so a good graphic designer with a good reputation is advised. Graphic design is not just the logo, but also can be packaging, web design and print on advertising media.

2) Marketing strategy – You need to figure out your target audience and segment them into different categories such as age, gender or location. Once that is figured out you will need to come up with some different ideas of how you want to market those people. Remember to measure the results in order to eliminate the efforts that just aren’t working. That way in future marketing efforts you can bypass the things that didn’t work the first time.

• Online Marketing – You can receive a massive amount of business online if done correctly. Get a website and start marketing it via Search Engine Optimisation. SEO (search engine optimization) can be extremely time consuming but so effective. If you do not have the time and effort to put into it then it is definitely an idea to find a person or professional company to deal with this for you. Not only SEO but social media marketing is also another way to get you recognized online. This shouldn’t be too hard to manage yourself but again if you don’t have the time then hire a professional to do the work for you. A professional is definitely advised if you want to dabble in AdWords campaigns also.

• Offline marketing – This would be things like, mailing, billboards, telemarketing, word of mouth and TV adverts. These can be extremely worthwhile as a lot of people do not use the internet or trust the internet. Putting a letter in their hand or them hearing your voice to confirm something can be a much more successful way to gain business and trust.

So obviously there is so much more needed to be done when starting a business. You also need knowledge, dedication, patience and structure. But implement all of this together and you could be onto a winner.

Animal, Bird, Insect, Fish: Traditional Patterns in Japanese Design

Animal, Bird, Insect, Fish: Traditional Patterns in Japanese Design Review

This is a lavishly illustrated 5″x7″ 360 page book of Japanese animal, insect, bird and fish. Most of the sources appear from Japanese screen paintings or other paintings. Animals included in the book are elephants, boar, tigers, insects, chickens, roosters, peacocks, heron, ducks, geese, birds of prey, cockatoos, parrots, horses, puppies–you get the picture. Lots of images, some of them very nice–but no CD-ROM. If you want to combine the images or manipulate them for artistic use, you will have to scan them, and if you want to scan any of the numerous images that span two pages, you will have to take the book apart.

Since the text is Japanese, I cannot say anything about license to use the book for personal or small scale commercial production. While the book is quite beautiful, I think it has limited usefulness as a design book because there is no CD-ROM, and that is why I gave it only four stars.

Animal, Bird, Insect, Fish: Traditional Patterns in Japanese Design Overview

The newest volume in the traditional patterns series, which includes Wave, Cloud, Pine and Flower, Bird, this book features animal paintings from the Edo period (1603 to 1868) and numerous surviving masterpieces from the modern history of painting. The Shosoin, a former repository of the Todaiji temple in Nara, has been described as the end of the Silk Road. Its collections of art and craft treasures come from as far as Persia and include many graceful images of winged beasts, lions, elephants, and camels, as well as beloved creatures like small animals, insects, and fish, which appear on the faces of those treasures. In Japan, animal patterns first appear on bronze bell-shaped vessels or mirrors in the Yayoi period (500 B.C.–300 A.D.) Since then, cranes, turtles, deer, rabbits, insects, and other charming animals have become favored motifs associated with good fortune in East Asian animism. But the Japanese art scene underwent a big change during the eighteenth century. Shen Nanpin, a Chinese bird-and-flower painter, brought his technique of meticulous depiction to Nagasaki in 1731. His drawing of the thin and translucent flower petals looks real enough to touch. The new style instantly spread throughout Japan. Maruyama Okyo (1733–1795) incorporated many elements of the new style and developed his own innovative paintings, which emphasize both a decorative nature and an attention to realism.
