Graphic Agitation Review

Liz McQuiston takes on the world! She gives an excellent overview of protest graphics from every continent (even Antarctica!) and from a very diverse range of debates: democracy movements, debates over reproductive rights, the environment, counter culture, civil rights, AIDS and health awareness and feminism, among many others.

The book is very well designed and will bring back memories. Lots of great colour reproductions and a nice size and paper weight make it an aesthetic treat. It is also a valuable sourcebook for studies in visual culture. Check out the screaming red cover!

As a DJ, don’t you hate it when you sell your own mixtape, but nobody buys it because of the ugly cover? Chances are that you probably designed the cover yourself. You did some research online, followed a couple articles and watch video tutorials on how to design – thinking that you will be an overnight expert graphic designer and Photoshop guru. You give your all in making this Jamaican themed cover design. But all those who see your finished product give you comments like ‘This is not Jamaican’ or ‘Your design looks like crap.’

I once recorded a mixtape of my own thinking that it will sell like hot cakes considering all the exclusives and guest freestyles that I had on it. The music was dope and my friends loved it and so did everyone who listened to it. But in order to save money I decided to design the mixtape cover myself. This was the biggest mistake that I made. The tape sold poorly and the poor cover design was to blame. This was when I decided to have a professional design my cover.

I researched online about which designer I should hire and numerous articles and reviews recommended that I visit sample mix tape designs. I was very impressed when I saw samples of other people’s work and excited to have my cover designed by them. Getting a hot and stylish mix tape cover was easier than I thought.

The prices were also very affordable: US$45 for a front cover design and US$65 for both front and back cover designs. The sales you will make from a mixtape with good music and an attractive cover will more than compensate for the money you’ll be spending on design expenses.  So why waste time and spend hundreds of dollars on graphic design lessons when you can get the job done correct and immediately.

Remember, If you want to sell more mixtapes you should have a professional do your mixtape cover design.

Graphic designing is a profession where the raw material is creativity and the output is art. Calculating the work done in terms of money most of the times becomes an arguable issue. The fiscal calculations of a project depend on many aspects, though rough but different standards are established for various types of graphic designing.

Web site designing costs can be broken down to depending on the type of site, wherein sites are classified as low end, mid range and high-end sites. A low site offers a 2-4 pages content and uses existing graphical themes or sock graphics are purchased. The designing package does not provide any animation page or any database interaction feature. The standard rates of such low-end site range approximately from $500 – $2000. On the other hand a mid range website costs approximately $2000 – $ 5000. The website includes 5-7 pages of content out of which some is developed. In addition, the designer provides with 2-4 original graphics and a standard layout with some customization. Animation includes JavaScript mouse over changes but data interactions are not provided. A high-end website involves a high cost and the standards range from $5000 – $10,000. A designer provides 12 or more pages of content, or even contents that are pragmatically/dynamically generated. The design has a unique layout and extensive graphics with navigation schemes. The animation is often done in JavaScript, Animated GIFs, Dynamic HTML, and Flash. In addition, designers also provide with SQL or Flat File database interaction.

The services of most graphic designers can also be calculated in hours. For instance the standard rates for basic graphic design are approximately $ 80 per hour, for custom graphic design $160 per hour, for 3-D graphic design $250 per hour, and for prepress correction and graphic adjustments $ 80 per hour. Such types of calculation have greatly simplified the rate and cost problems of designing projects, as the designer is getting paid rationally if a certain project requires more time. Similarly, a client can give work in contracts that are based on hours.
