This is the latest in a series of books that consist of collections of essays about the theory and practice of graphic design. The essays in the first two volumes were mostly from contemporary sources, particularly the AIGA Journal of Graphic Design. This third, retrospective volume is of even greater value in the sense that it gathers under one cover some of the most important historic writings on design from the late 19th century to the early 1980s, arranged chronologically. It contains over fifty hard-to-find articles by prominent figures in graphic design, among them William Morris, W.A. Dwiggins, El Lissitzky, Varvara Stepanova, Gyorgy Kepes, Alexander Rodchenko, Ladislav Sutnar, Beatrice Warde and Wolfgang Weingart. Graphic designers need to know where they came from, in order to better decide where to go. Your primary goal is to find just the right graphic design studio, so here’s a thought. Do a hunt for graphic design studios, and even localizing it for your area, there will the tons of responses. And, in today’s internet world, it’s not necessary for the firm to the local. That merely broadens the scope of what’s available to you and adds to the adversity of making a conclusion.

So, how do you decide? Look first at what you need and it will be much easier.

Being clear about what you would like and need, and in a position to clearly communicate that, will make it much simpler to spend time with which of the graphic design studios is a fit. Are you looking to focus your marketing efforts on print or the internet. Do you already have a logo or do you need one? What about CD or DVD production? Make a visible list of what you would like.

Bring along your past marketing materials and ask your candidates what they think. This is one other way to assess whether or not you would like to work with a specific studio.

Knowing your product or service, your market and what it is you would like is only half the equation. The other half is what you are searching for. Here are some simple queries. You can rank the candidates on each of these on a 1 to 5 scale where 1 is “not in any respect” and 5 is “Yes, absolutely”.

Do they have entry to all the services I need? You may wish to make a directory of the services and then rate the graphic design studio on each one.

Does the style of their work meet my taste criteria? Do they have experienced with my product or service? Do I think I’ll enjoy working with them? (This may not seem as important until you’re in the center of a project. Then it will be crucial.) Will they give me references? Are the references pleased with the effort they received?

Fine, now you are armed and ready to select from among the bounty of graphic design studios. Remember those that come up first in your search know the way to optimize their internet sites and if you are working on a net site, this may be essential to you.
